The first $1 gold coin was minted by Christopher Bechtler in 1832 in Rutherfordton, NC.
North Carolina led the country in gold production until the California Gold Rush in 1848.
The North Carolina Gold Trail is a heritage destination trail that spans across the state whose purpose is to educate visitors about the NC Gold Rush and the significance it played in the history of the U.S. This trail is currently under development and counties will be added throughout the year.
