Christopher Bechtler created America’s first $1 gold coin in Rutherfordton nearly 200 years ago. Bechtler's home and original site of his minting operation are now heritage destinations for all to see and enjoy. To further commemorate Bechtler's legacy to Rutherfordton and Rutherford County, the Gold Mile, a one-mile walking trail around downtown Rutherfordton, is dotted with one-dollar gold coin replicas dedicated to members of the community and beyond.
Funds raised through the sale of Gold Mile Coins go directly to the preservation of Rutherfordton's Bechtler assets.
